2008 Minnesota Twins Roster

The Twins weren't considered contenders -- with the Tigers and Indians getting the division kudos. But not to be! A very young starting staff, a solid bullpen, and a returning core of offensive defenders signed to long-term contracts (Mauer, Morneau and Cuddyer) attempted to take-it-all and bring the Twins back to playoff glory. Bill Smith got his feet wet in baseball politics as the Twins new general manager. He traded for the young Delmon Young. Johan Santana was shipped to the Mets for Carlos Gomez and three promising pitchers. Once again, free agents were signed who looked to be less than adequate (although Livan Hernandez is a workhorse and won 10 with great offense). The rotation is rockie caliber and shows signs of greatness. The All-Star game saw Joe Mauer voted in by the fans and Joe Nathan and Justin Morneau as reserves. Morneau won the Home Run Derby and scored the AL first and winning runs in the mid-season classic. Baseball is a long 162-game season. For the Twins, they needed a 163rd tie-breaker with the White Sox, losing 1-0! Ouch! Joe Mauer won his second batting title and first Gold Glove. Third highest attendance: 2,302,431 fans! And we can only look forward to 2009 (and the outdoor stadium in 2010).
