1986 Minnesota Twins Roster

It had been more than two decades since the Minnesota Twins were known as a home-run hitting spectacle on the field. Five players took the ball long this season, led by Gary Gaetti with 34, Kirby Puckett with 31, Kent Hrbek with 29, Tom Brunansky with 23 and Roy Smalley with 20. Kirby Puckett became a household name and hit for the cycle against the Oakland A's. He was named as a starter to the All-Star game, and received the first of numerous Gold Glove awards. Gaetti also ended the Twins 14-year fielding drought with a Gold Glove at third. Attendance fell to 1,255,453 and Ray Miller was fired in the waning month of a disastrous season and replaced by Twins journeyman Tom Kelly. Just to be safe, General Manager Andy MacPhail brought longtime New York Yankee manager Ralph Houk into the front office as a field consultant, but it would soon be appparent that Houk's talents weren't needed!
