Attendance surged to 1,162,727 as two Minnesotans joined the team. Dave Goltz won 20 (tied for most in league) and Tom Johnson won 16 (in relief) as the Minnesota Twins put up an early fight in a tough division. Although they won 84 games, they were 17+ games behind come season's end. All-Star game starter Rod Carew had a storybook season, flirting with a .400 average before ending the season as the batting champion with a .388 average to go with 128 runs scored and 16 triples. Lyman Bostock came in second with a modest .336 batting average. Butch Wynegar and Larry Hisle received All-Star honors, and Hisle led the lead with 119 runs-batted-in. Designated hitter Glenn Adams drove in 8 runs during a game in late June.
