The American League was dominated by the New York Yankees for two decades, with only the Chicago White Sox in 1959 and the Cleveland Indians in 1948 and 1954 winning the pennant. Then came the 1965 Minnesota Twins, setting the league attendance record with 1,463,268 fans, as well as hosting the All-Star Game at Met Stadium. Earl Battey was the starting catcher for the mid-season classic, and joining him were Jim Grant, Jimmie Hall, Harmon Killebrew, Tony Oliva and Zoilo Versalles, who was named Most Valuable Player of the American League. Oliva was the league batting champ (.321) and Grant led the league in victories with 21. Jim Kaat won another Gold Glove, as did Versalles, but it was winning the division, despite major injuries to players Killebrew, Battey, Oliva and Pascual, that excited the Twins Cities. The National League came to town, led by Los Angeles Dodger hurlers Don Drysdale and Sandy Koufax. The Twins beat the dynamic duo in the first two games, but it took all seven before Los Angeles emerged victorious with a 2-0, 3-hit finale by Koufax to end the Twins baseball season.
