8/8/2004: The Twins and the A’s met in a battle of first place teams on a Sunday afternoon at the Metrodome. The announced crowd of 29,176 gets twice their money’s worth as the teams battle to the 18th inning tied at three. Oakland scored three times in the top of the frame off of Terry Mulholland, but the Twins don’t go quietly in their half, scoring two on a Justin Morneau home run; but the A’s hold on to win the second longest game in Metrodome history.

8/8/1998: Though the Twins lost the game to the Orioles, 6-3; Paul Molitor had a career game and reached a milestone at the same time. When he came to bat in the bottom of the ninth, Molitor already had four hits in the game. His ninth inning single made him 5-for-5 with a double and two runs in the loss. After his fifth inning single, Molitor stole second base, the 500th stolen base of his career.

8/8/1985: The Twins defeated the first place Angels behind a solid outing from Bert Blyleven, who pitched 7 1/3 innings and allowed just two runs. Kirby Puckett went 3-for-4 from the plate, and Ron Davis pitched a perfect inning and a third to earn his 16th save of the season.

 

35 years ago…
8/8/1972: Dan Monzon singled with the bases loaded in the bottom of the tenth inning to score Steve Braun in a 6-5 Twins win over the Texas Rangers. Jim Strickland earned the win when he took over for Bert Blyleven and pitched a scoreless tenth. With the win, the third straight for the Twins, Minnesota moved within six games of first place in the AL West.

 

46 years ago…
8/8/1961: The Twins snapped an eight game losing streak with a victory over Boston at Fenway Park despite the fact that Camilo Pascual allowed an inside-the-park grand slam to Gary Geiger in the third inning. The Twins score all six of their runs in the fifth and sixth inning, with Pascual himself being the hitting star knocking in three runs in addition to his complete game victory on the mound.
