Twins Franchise History from Johnson to Mauer
May 15th, 2009 by scot
May 15, 1989
The Twins had gotten off to rocky start in 1989, but looked as though they might be righting the ship by mid-May. After an 11-18 start, the Twins had won five consecutive games, including sweeps of the Red Sox in Boston and the Blue Jays at the Metrodome.
On May 15 it looked as though that all changed. The Twins started a three-game series with the red hot Kansas City Royals at the Metrodome. Mark Vancil covered the game for the Star Tribune:
A five-game winning streak came to an end and another solid start by Roy Smith was wasted, but the Twins’ biggest loss came long before the final numbers flashed on the Metrodome scoreboard Monday night.
Willie Wilson’s first home run in a year provided Kansas City with a 4-3 victory, but it was an injury to first baseman Kent Hrbek that brought down a dark curtain on another troubled evening.
Hrbek suffered a dislocated left shoulder diving for a ground ball in the fifth inning and will be put on the 15-day disabled list today. He popped the shoulder back in place on the field but Dr. John Steubs, who examined Hrbek in the clubhouse, said Hrbek would be unable to do anything for the better part of a week.
Executive vice president Andy MacPhail met with trainer Dick Martin and manager Tom Kelly behind closed doors after the game to decide on the impending personnel move. With the toughest part of the schedule ahead and second baseman Wally Backman out another week, another injury on an already thin team was the last thing the Twins could afford.
Vancil added an ominous stat from the early part of the season:
Going into last night’s game, they were 12-4 with him at first base and 4-14 with him on the bench or at designated hitter.
The Twins actually fared pretty well in Hrbek’s absence. Hrbek was on the DL for a total of 39 games, with the team going 21-18 over that span. The Twins played roughly .500 ball the rest of the season to finish 80-82.

Liriano Masterful; Twins Go Up 2-0
The Twins offense scored four runs on 12 hits against Tigers pitching in Game 2 of the 2006 ALCS, which was more than enough for Francisco Liriano.
Liriano’s dominance over the Tigers seemed to be of a different variety than Twins fans are used to. Though he finished with seven K’s, the strikeout was not his main weapon for the bulk of the game. For the first few innings, it was a steady diet of pop-ups and weak ground balls from the Tiger lineup that seemed off-balance from the start. Liriano retired the first seven men he faced before walking Thames in the third inning. The first hit off of Liriano did not come until Thames’ next trip to the plate with two out in the top of the fifth inning.
In all, Lirano allowed just three hits in seven innings of work.
The Twins started the scoring in the third inning with a two-out rally that was started by a Luis Castillo ground-ball single to right. Nick Punto followed by lining a rocket down the right field line that Magglio Ordonez had to dig out of the corner. By the time Ordonez recovered, Castillo had scored and Punto was on third with a triple. Joe Mauer took the next Justin Verlander pitch to the gap in right-center field for and RBI double, his first run batted in of the playoffs.
A lead off double by Justin Morneau in the fourth led to the Twins’ third run when Jason Kubel singled him home with two outs.
The Tigers finally scored in the eighth, after Liriano had left the game. Brandon Inge led the inning off with a double off of Jesse Crain, who was then removed in favor of Dennys Reyes. Vance Wilson came into the game to pinch hit for the lefty Granderson, and delivered with a single to score Inge. The next batter, Omar Infante, hit a sharp ground ball straight to Jason Bartlett at short for an easy double play.
The Twins added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth when Punto and Mauer both reached with no outs. Michael Cuddyer’s ground out scored Punto from third to make the score 4-1 Twins.
Joe Nathan earned the final four outs for the Twins, pitching around a two-out triple in the ninth by Craig Monroe to earn his first save of the ALCS. The scene will shift to Detroit for Game 5 on Friday.

I orginally wrote about this game in 2007. I updated with the boxscore and some information from the steel-trap like memory of frequent commenter and occasional contributor Beau, who most certainly was not alive but remembered reading about the game.

Catfish Hunter came as close to winning a game all by himself as a player can get in the game of baseball.
Hunter faced 27 Twins, and retired each of them. He had 11 strikeouts, three of which came against Harmon Killebrew; and the Twins’ lineup only managed to hit six balls out of the infield.
Twins pitcher Dave Boswell did not allow an Oakland run until the seventh inning. With Rick Monday on third due to a double and a wild pitch, Hunter executed a bunt that he was able to beat out for a run-scoring single.
Hunter was not through, however. With the bases loaded and a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the eighth, Catfish delivered a two-run single off of Ron Perranoski.
Perhaps the most interesting out that day was the 27th. Hunter faced Rich Reese, a pinch hitter for the pitcher’s position that was occupied by Ron Perranoski. Reese fouled off at least five consecutive pitches in the at-bat before finally watching strike three.
At the end of the night, Hunter had not only pitched a perfect game, but had knocked in three of his team’s four runs, including the game-winner. Unfortunately, only 6,298 fans were present to witness the first American League regular season perfect game since 1922. The New York Times billed it as the 10th perfect game in major league history, but is actually recognized as the ninth (the NYT was likely counting Harvey Haddix’s nine perfect innings in a game that he ended up losing in 1959).
The Twins have been on the losing end of two of the 17 perfect games in major league history.

Kubel Comes Through in 11th, Twins Take Game 1
If the first game is any indication, fans are in for a classic ALCS. The Twins and the Tigers went into extra innings before the Twins finally pulled out their fourth consecutive playoff victory (fifth consecutive victory overall).
While Johan Santana was dealing early, the Twins’ offense got off to a good start. In the bottom of the second inning, Jason Bartlett homered with Rondell White and Phil Nevin both on base to give the home team a 3-0 lead. A Brandon Inge solo shot in the third cut the deficit, but Santana held the Tigers to just that single run until the sixth inning.
With two on and two out in the sixth, Magglio Ordonez homered deep down the left-field line to give the Tigers a 4-3 lead.
That score held until the bottom of the eighth inning. With Fernando Rodney on the mound, Luis Castillo and Joe Mauer both singled to put runners at first and third with two out. It was the first hit of the playoffs for Mauer, but Michael Cuddyer seems to have made a habit of getting big hits this playoff season. He did it again with an RBI single off of Todd Jones that tied the game and ultimately forced extra innings.
Jones stayed in the game and held the Twins scoreless in the bottom of the ninth and tenth. Juan Rincon came on in the ninth inning for the Twins and held the Tigers scoreless, despite allowing a runner as far as third base in the 11th.
It all came to an end in the bottom of the 11th, however, when Cuddyer was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. He advanced to second on a Justin Morneau single, and a Torii Hunter grounder moved the runners over with one out.
In one of the more interesting moves of the game, the Tigers chose to intentionally walk Jason Tyner to load the bases with Jason Kubel on deck. Kubel delivered the single, and the Twins took a 1-0 lead in the series.

May 8, 1984
A 23 year old Kirby Puckett made his major league debut against the California Angels at Anaheim Stadium. Puckett led off for the Twins and played centerfield that day. Puckett grounded out to short in his first at bat, but the day picked up from there.
In the top of the third inning, Puckett singled off of California starter Jim Slaton with one out, stole second base, and was eventually stranded at third when Tom Brunansky grounded into a double play. He singled again in the fifth only to be forced out at second by the next batter.
With one out and a man on first in the seventh, Kirby hit his third single of the day off of reliever Luis Sanchez. He would score his first major league run later in the inning on a Brunansky single. Puckett capped off his successful debut in the ninth with his fourth base hit of the game.
The Twins defeated the Angels 5-0 behind a four hit shutout by Frank Viola.
Puckett would add 2,300 more hits to his base hit total throughout his 12 year career.
Kirby wasn’t the only player making his debut that day. Mike Hart batted seventh and played left field for the Twins. Hart would finish 0-4 for his major league debut. He would play 13 more games for the Twins in 1984, batting .172. Hart would get another crack at the big leagues in 1987 when he played 34 games for the Orioles.

Sweep is Complete: Twins Dismiss A’s, Await Opponent for ALCS
The Twins scored early and often for the second straight game en route to an 8-2 win that looked almost too easy. Now the only drama is will it be the Tigers or the Yankees in the ALCS?
Rondell White got the scoring started with a two-run home run off of Danny Haren in the second inning. Though Haren escaped the second with no more damage done, the Twins continued to pour on the runs in the third inning when Michael Cuddyer hit his second home run of the series, also a two-run blast. A Torii Hunter lead-off home run in the fourth inning made the score 5-0 Twins, and Haren’s day was over a bit later in the same inning after giving up a triple to designated-hitter Jason Tyner.
Jason Bartlett singled home Tyner to make the score 6-0 Twins. Justin Morneau’s RBI single in the fifth was the Twins’ seventh run. On the other side of the ball, Brad Radke insured that he would make at least one more start by shutting down the A’s offense. Through eight innings, Radke allowed the A’s just five hits. His first walk of the game didn’t come until the ninth inning, to Frank Thomas, the last batter Radke faced. Thomas came around to score on a Nick Swisher’s two-run single, meaning that Radke’s final line includes the single earned run.
The celebration on the field was short for the Twins, who now await the winner of the Tigers-Yankees series for an ALCS opponent. The Tigers shut out the Yankees 6-0 in Game 3 to take a 2-1 series lead.

In the second inning of the Twins game against the Kansas City Royals, Rod Carew stood on third base with a very good chance to make history.
Major League Baseball had been hyping its one millionth run scored for quite some time. The first run had been scored on April 22, 1876 by Wes Fisler of the Philadelphia Nationals. Some 99 years, 12 days later, Claudell Washington scored run number 999,999 and every game in progress was interrupted with the announcement that the next run would be the millionth. Fans and players alike eagerly anticipated the moment, and just minutes after the announcement Rod Carew had the first good chance to score the anticipated run.
With nobody out Carew doubled scoring Dan Ford from first base (presumably run number 999,998). Sergio Ferrer singled, sending Carew to third base, just 90 feet from home with nobody out.
The next batter, Steve Brye, hit a fly ball to right field. Carew tagged up, and attempted to score. Right fielder Al Cowens had other ideas, and gunned Carew out at home on a 9-2 scoring play. It was reported that not only was Carew thrown out, but he hurt his leg in the process. The injury was not serious, however, and Carew stayed in the game.
The staff at a computer center in Manhattan looked on as the events of the next few minutes unfolded. At approximately 3:32 EDT, Cincinnati short stop Dave Concepcion hit a home run, and began sprinting around the bases to try and score the historic run. At about the same time in San Francisco, Milt May of the Houston Astros hit a three-run homer, the lead run represented by Bob Watson who was on second base.
It was determined by the computer center that Watson touched home at 3:32 and 30 seconds, just as Concepcion was racing around third base. In honor of the occasion, Watson was presented with a watch.

Twins Jump Ahead Early, Make Liriano’s Postseason Debut a Breeze
Francisco Liriano got more than he could have asked for in his first playoff start: a lot of run support early in the game.
The Twins started the scoring in the second inning against Esteban Loaiza. Michael Cuddyer led off with a double down the third base line. Justin Morneau followed by drawing a walk, and with one out Torii Hunter hit deep fly ball down the left field line that stayed fair and left the park to make the score 3-0.
Though the A’s came back with a pair of runs on a Mark Ellis two-run home run off of Liriano in the top of the fourth, the Twins quickly padded their lead in the bottom of the inning. Jason Tyner led off with a bloop single, but Loaiza retired the next two Twins. With Tyner on second and two out, Nick Punto’s grounder just escaped the glove of A’s first baseman Nick Swisher and made its way into the right field corner for an RBI double. With new pitcher Kirk Saarloos in the game, Joe Mauer drew a walk setting the stage for Michael Cuddyer’s three-run blast into the home run porch in left field. By the time the A’s got out of the fourth inning, the Twins had a 7-2 lead.
The Twins added one more run in the fifth when Jason Bartlett reached with a triple and was knocked home by Luis Castillo’s single down the right field line.
Liriano lasted six innings in his postseason debut. He allowed just the two runs on five hits while walking three and striking out seven. He was replaced for the seventh inning after having thrown 106 pitches.
The A’s got a few runs against the Twins’ bullpen to make the final score 8-4 and give the Twins a two games to none lead in the best-of-five series. The series will shift to Oakland with the Twins needing just a single win to advance.

Ed. – For better or worse 2006 was one of the most memorable seasons in Twins history. Part of the frustration from that season were the “what ifs” it presented, particularly the big one: what if Francisco Liriano had remained healthy through the entire season and playoffs? Over the next few weeks, I am going to replay the 2006 playoffs using Diamond Mind software. The only change will be that Francisco Liriano will be available for the Twins, replacing Glen Perkins on the 25-man roster. I’m only playing through once and assuming that all of the other series from that year end with identical outcomes to the real thing. First up: the ALDS against the Oakland A’s.

Twins Pour it on in the Late Innings, Take Game 1
Game 1 started as advertised, a pitcher’s duel between two of the best left-handed pitchers in the league: Johan Santana and Barry Zito. The two exchanged zeroes through the first four innings of the game. Each pitcher allowed just two hits and a walk over the first four frames.
The scoring began in the top of the fifth inning. Nick Swisher led off with a single to right, and was pushed to second when Mark Ellis drew a one-out walk. The next batter, Jason Kendall, grounded a single through the hole on the left side of the infield to score Swisher from second and put the A’s ahead 1-0. Santana got Mark Kotsay to fly out for the second out of the inning, but Milton Bradley came throught with a two-out single to put the A’s ahead by two.
Zito pitched around a Rondell White double in the home half of the fifth, but the Twins finally got to the Oakland lefty with two out in the bottom of the sixth. Joe Mauer worked the count full with two outs and fouled three consecutive pitches away before taking ball four. With a man on, Michael Cuddyer snuck a double down the third base line moving Mauer to third. After taking a called strike, Justin Morneau launched a long ball over the baggy to put the Twins ahead 3-2.
After Juan Rincon struck out the side in relief of Santana in the top of the seventh, the Twins added some insurance in after the stretch. Phil Nevin drew a four-pitch walk from Zito with one out, followed by a groundball single off the bat of Jason Bartlett. Luis Castillo followed with another single to load the bases, still with only one out. Nick Punto followed with a single that scored both Nevin and the speedy Bartlett. Zito’s game was over after 6 1/3 innings, he left trailing 5-2.
The Twins added one more run when Torii Hunter scored from second on Rondell White’s single. The bullpen combo of Rincon and Nathan held the A’s scoreless for the remainder of the game to close out Game 1.

With two outs in the fourth inning, Dave Kingman of the Oakland A’s hit a towering pop fly off of Frank Viola. Viola looked up and waited for the ball to come down. He, and 10,155 fans at the Metrodome that night, are still waiting for the ball to drop.
The ball managed to find its way into one of the seven-inch diameter holes in the 186 foot high Metrodome roof. Kingman was awarded a ground-rule double. Fortunately for the Twins, he was out at third on a fielder’s choice the very next play.
The Twins went on to win the game 3-1, thanks mostly to Viola’s 7 2/3 innings of four-hit baseball.
On the next night, the team staged a pre-game ceremony in which a stadium worker would drop a ball from the roof into the waiting glove of Mickey Hatcher, perhaps to bring some closure to the bizarre play. That closure wouldn’t come, however, as Hatcher dropped the ball.
